Josh Roberts: 40 second film evaluation.

1. Use of the camera
Does your finished work show that you can:

- Hold a shot steady?
I think that our film proves that we are fairly competent on with the camera, and that we did not show signs of camera shake.
- Frame a shot appropiately?
Yes, I believe our film shows that we can frame a shot appropiately.
- Use a variety of shot types?
From assesing our film, i thnik it shows that we have used a variety of different shot types and techniques.
- Use composition techniques?
- Yes, we used a few composition techniques, and i thnik our film reflects that.

2. Use of editing
Does your finished work show that you can:

- Apply the rules of continuity editing? (Do the shots flow together?)
I think that the majority of the time, the shots flow into each other. There is a few shots where it is borderline along the 180 degree line, but most of the time, yes.
- Choose appropiate editing transitions to put your shots together?
We didn't use any transitions from slide to slide, we think that our film flows into the next clip.

3. Selection of content
Does your finished work show that you can:

- Choose appropiate costume, make-up and props for your film genre?
We used face make-up to add effect to the film, and tomato ketchup for blood.. I think we pulled it off fairly well, and the extra's that we used suit the film genre.
- Choose appropiate locations and settings for your film genre?
Our film is largely set around horror within the home so i think we used the setting of a house to out advantage.
- Choose appropiate actors for your film?
Yeah, our actress portrayed the role well.

4. Self-assessment

What did you do to help to complete the film?
My role in the film was the director. I chose the shots and directed where the camera and actors were.

What improvements could be made to the finished film?
I think if we spent more time on the film then it could've come out better. I thnik if we changed the lighting settings then we could have got a better contrast.

Is there anything that you will do differently when it comes to your final coursework film?
Yes, I will take the lighting failure into consideration.

Andrew's 40 Second Film Assignment

Holding a shot steady.
As i was featured in the '40 second clip', there wasn't a chance for me to film any clip  at this time, however, in the previous clips and practice runs we produced in and around the college, i was in hold of the camera, giving me chance to experience the control of filming.
In the processes of filming around the college, i was able to experience shooting a variety of different angles and shot types.

Use of editing
In our 40second film, all of our shot flow reasonably well together, however, with more thought and preparation we could have made the shots flow more professionally together.
There are a few shots where it is pushing the 180 degree line which does have an effect of professionalism which we wanted.
In our film, there wasn't any need to included any transitions from clip to clip, our clips flow into each other, avoiding the use of any transitions.

Selection of Content
to create the effect that was need for our film genre, we added make-up to add the effect of a 'ghost' and as a final last resort, tomato ketchup for the use of blood. to say that the use of tomato ketchup was horrid and only just created the effect we wanted, we feel that the film shows fairly well the genre and effects we wanted to create.
Our film is st around the location of a home, therefore we used all the potential the house held to its advantage.

I feel that the actors/actresses pulled off the acting roles they were given, creating the genre of the film appropriately.

Self-Assessment
In the process of producing this short film, my help in completing the film was acting the role of the ghost and in parts directing with another team member Josh.

in complete honesty, i don't feel that this filming was our best, we as group know this and are therefore overall slightly disappointed with the final product. The improvements that should be made to create a better and more professional clip are to be more aware of our 180 degree rule and therefore, for our final coursework piece, we will be persistent in making sure we create a film of a high proficiency.

Sam Cox's Assessment Homework.

Use of camera
I feel that during the filming our use of the camera was good. We used a tripod to keep the camera steady and to help us frame it properly. Too accomplish proper framing we used the grid. Our final film was also quite good because of a variety of shot types. The shot types we used included, close ups, mid shot, over the shoulders ect. yet always keeping the continuity of the 180 degree rule and 30 degree rule.

Use of Editing
Our editing i feel is our strongest point. On our film our continuity editing was good and the shots flowed well. However, we didnt use any other transitions than normal.

Selection of Content
The only costume we used was a hospital dress which we covered in tomato ketchup to symbolise blood. We also used alot of makeup to achieve a ghost-like face of our ghost actor. The film we were remaki ng was set in a bathroom and so we also used a bathroom of similar design to film in. Our actors i feel were very good and convincing, especially towards the beginning of the film.

Self Assessment
To complete the film i did the filming. Whilst recording i was in charge of the camera and recording whilst andrew and Josh directed our actor and figured out the angles. I Also helped with make-up and costumes, to be specific, i was responisble for the tomato ketchup.

Overall i feel the film was indifferent. Our use of 180 and 30 degree rules was not good i felt, but then i was shown that it was ok by our teacher. I feel the lack of space availible may have affected this. Also alot more light was needed as we had no allowed for difference in camera resolution. When it comes to our final coursework we will plan alot better and execute our shot list with more profficiency.

Assessment Film

Predominantly, our film we feel is level 2. We feel this because we have poor continuity and don't follow the 180 degree or 30 degree rules. There are also clips in the short film where it seems to jump and therefore doesn't make sense. However, the clips in the original film, jumped, but theirs seemed to have a better understanding of the film. We think that if we had followed the original script better, we could've improved to a level 3. In addition, we forgot to set our white balance and our focusing was a little off. Added to the other mistakes, all combine to make in our opinion quite a poor film. We would give ourselves between 35-40 marks.

Two Friends Composition Re-edit Final.

Positive: Our thirty degree rule, headroom and 180 degree composition rule all worked.

Negative. Our tripod was not setup properly, it was slanted and this shows on the film. We need to make sure our tripod is level. Also, One one frame we forgot to move the camera by thirty degrees. We also failed to edit out a tiny amount of background noise and we could frame our over the shoulder shots better.

Overall however, it was much better than our first attempt.

Storyboard composition excercise.

This is our original storyboard for our short "two friends" film. We filmed the clip once and then decided that it wasn't up to scratch therefore we re-filmed it again and re-drew the last three shots...

These are the last three shots we re-drew up. We decided to re-draw the shots because we didn't think there was enough array of camera angles in our original storyboard.

Two friends Composition.

Not our best. The acting was pretty bad and the editing was not good, maybe due to the quality of our acting.

However!

Firstly our rule of thirds was kept too strictly and so looked good.

The headroom throughout was good.

Our 180 degree rule also worked.

Tuesday 12 October 2010

We picked the above shot because the ghost in the window was very effective and fitted with the rule of thirds.
Again we picked the above shot because we thought it was very professional for an amateur film and it was in fitting with the rule of thirds with the hand in the top right.
We picked the above shot because of the angle and the rule of thirds. also the content was good.
This was our favorite shot. The angle was nice and the frame was effective.
Again this frame is a good example of a high-angled shot.
Nice shot. effective.
Good example of  an over-the-shoulder shot. Nice Angle.
Good positioning. Nice effective shot.
Good content and good use of the rule of thirds. Overall after viewing the film we thought it was extremely professional and effective.

Continuity Second Attempt

What Works?
We feel that on the whole the complete piece is of a good quality. We feel that our control of variables was good and our use of the 180 degree rule helped us to maintain continuity.

What Didn't?
In the join between the clips of the actor arriving on the landing and him looking at his watch, our editing was not up to the standard of the rest of the piece. The flow of the edit was broken.

Continuity Exercise

This is the finished edit of our continuity exercise. Enjoy!

Have you achieved continuity editing?
We believe we have achieved seamless editing, although our film has unfortunately pixelated.

Have you framed your shots properly?
We believe that we have achieved the shots in which we were advised about.

Have you included the number of shots you planned?
We think that we have included the number of shots we planned. Although we didn't complete the film unfortunately.. We think that it turned our rather well!

Does your piece have pace/atmosphere?
We think the editing is pretty slick therefore yes.

How could it be improved?
We think that if we could of finished the film then it would've made it better.

First film exercise

Have you framed your shots properly?

We believe that we have framed our shots properly with no faults such as ‘floating heads’

Have you included the number of shots you planned?

We have included the 13 shots that we planned

Does your piece have pace/atmosphere?

Yes! There is a varied amount of pace and atmosphere throughout the whole clip

How could it be improved?

We think that we should re-take the last clip due to the laughter that one of our character had. We also think more precise and realistic timing from clip to clip.
